Arthur L. Pope
From the Oregon Naturalist<\/p><\/div>\n

Arthur Lamson Pope was born about 1877 to Jacob L. and Adelia Pope in Ulysses, Tompkins, NY.<\/p>\n

In 1890, at age 13, the family moved from New York to Oregon.<\/p>\n

Arthur was interested in birds at an early age. At 14, he published an article on birds nesting in Oregon in the 1891 Oologist publication and one on the Mongolian Pheasant in the Taxidermist publication.<\/p>\n

An 1891 ad in the Oologist shows us that he became interested in taxidermy.<\/p>\n

In 1893, at age 16, two articles were published in the Oologist on the Sooty Grouse and birds in Yamhill County, Oregon.<\/p>\n

At the age of 17 (1894), Arthur founded the Northwestern Ornithological Association and was the first president of the organization. He published an article in the Nidiologist publication on the Sooty Grouse.<\/p>\n

In 1895, he announced that he was \u201cbooking orders\u201d for Oregon bird eggs to be collected for the coming season.<\/p>\n

Early in 1896, Arthur began working at the Yamhill County Reporter and announced in the Oregon Naturalist that he was selling his \u201centire private collection of Oregon birds\u2019 eggs.\u201d<\/p>\n

The NOA was a productive group and in about five years, Arthur published 17 articles which were mostly his observations of birds in Yamhill County.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, Arthur died from tuberculosis in 1897 at the age of 20.<\/p>\n
