Publications at the time informed collectors on bird species. Many articles were written by collectors, ornithologists, naturalists, and oologists. They placed advertisements looking for bird skins or eggs to purchase or to sell and/or exchange. These journals can be found on the Internet Archive or the Biodiversity Heritage Library websites and are:

The Auk has been published continuously since 1884 and was recently recognized as one of the 100 most influential journals of biology and medicine over the past 100 years. The Auk became The Auk: Ornithological Advances in 2014 to emphasize its revised focus on basic science. Since 2016, it has been published by the American Ornithological Society (the result of a merger of the AOU and the Cooper Ornithological Society). The journal was officially retitled Ornithology for its 138th volume in 2021.
